New Straw :D

Went out to a PetCo the other day looking to get some ferret things, and there was this big beautiful boy all by his lonesome...

...So obviously he just had to come home with me. No name on him yet, but he was just so big and beautiful I had to bring him home :) He's such a sweetie too, just sat there for that last pic and didn't try to grab onto me or anything. More pics and updates, although I'm sure he's going to molt fairly soon, he really needs it.

just a little update

i thought i should update since i haven't in a long time, and i've moved halfway across the country. i ended up finding new homes for a lot of my hermits, it was hard to do but better that way. some i tried to ship out and they just didn't make it. i'm down to 4 indos and 1 ruggie.

Ms. Ludie actually came on the day and a half bus trip with me out here. i got a tupperware and made a special traveling bag that it could fit in, and she was a carry on (obviously i didn't tell anyone on the bus or at the stations i had a crab with me, last thing i needed was to be out in the middle of no where and have some weirdo not let me on the next bus cos i had a crab with me, lol). she did very well and is about to molt for her second time since moving out here. still no friends for her (5 years and counting on that... :P ) she's just too aggressive with all the crabs. oh well. i keep trying anyways. here's the latest Ms. Ludie pic in all her giant glory, lol. and yes she wouldn't let go of the blanket for a good 5 minutes, oh Ludie...

the two little indos are as nocturnal and cranky as ever, they both just finished molting for their first time since moving. they aren't especially happy with me cos i put Riku the ruggie in with them. she's been busy molting lately too, should be up soon i think. Riku's just too hyper for them, the indos are quiet and like to keep to themselves, she likes to run around and act like an idiot climbing on everyone. they'll be in a bigger tank soon, so there will be more running room for her and more personal space for the indos. i haven't gotten new pics of them yet. i'll probably get some when Riku comes up and i switch tanks around.

when i go to switch the tanks around i'm going to be installing built in water dishes. something i've been wanting to do for awhile, but just never got around to it. i might end up either adopting a few crabs soon, and if i don't i'm going to look into getting some new ones i think. there will be plenty of room and i'm also working out an idea for 2nd levels in the tanks that i've been tinkering with. i'll post again with pics when i get it all done.

i ended up taking a lot of cherry i guess, he's just so well behaved. he just sits there, i really didn't even have to hold him still for the pictures, lol. he's also very people and crab friendly and will take food right from my hand when i offer it. his antenna and eyestalks are much more stubby than most pp's that i've seen. and he's starting to look very ashy as you can see in some of the pictures, so a molt might be coming on soon. he doesn't like to climb as much as blindy, but one of his favorite places is to sit in a half of a coconut shell.

when i first got her one of her eyes was all brown, and i thought she might be blind in that eye, hence the name. now i think both of her eyes looks the same, so i don't know if something just happened to that one or what. she's very people and crab friendly, doesn't mind being held or handled at all and will take food straight from my hand. loves to climb on anything whether it's climbable or not.

probably the most friendly to people in the bunch, i couldn't get her to go in her shell to get a good claw/opening pic. i even touched the top of her head lightly and she still stayed out. also really likes swimming in the deep pools, and her and the little one tend to follow each other around and hang out together a lot.

as a kind of a warning, i've never held her in my hand, she gets a little happy with opening her claw really wide when i pick her up by the shell, and i've been pinched bad in the past by ones this big, so i tend to let her be crabby all she wants. i hadn't noticed until i went to make sure she's really a she, but aparently she lost the leg on her left side coming out of that last molt. not entirely sure why, i had a divider up so i know the other crabs had nothing to do with it. even though i'm wary of handling her she's very nice to all the crabs she's with, and i have them in with e's right now, the little one likes to climb on her and she doesn't mind.

not sure why she's in this triton kind of shell, there's lots of turbos in the tank but she seems to like this kind. loves to swim in the deep pools a lot, and chirps for no reason, at you, a shadow, the thunder, when she falls off of something.... lol

well, aside from the fact that they did not like being in tupperware, in a box for the better part of a day, everyone is doing fine now. the temps a little lower than they're used to, but i'm working on it, and i can't seem to remember where i put clean feeder shells... :/ oh well, pics of the ginormous 55 gal coming soon!! :D

moving and cleaning

well, hermits are getting ready for the move. there'll be lots of cleaning tanks going on today, well the straw and e tank was getting cleaned reguardless, cos they smell. lol, stinky little hermits. i think they have some buried food treasures that are going bad. driving me crazy. maybe i'll take some pics of them while i'm cleaning. we'll see just how stinky it is before i go promising pics tho.

i can't wait to set up the 55 gallon. it's gonna be so much fun. i gotta get some stuff to make second levels though, and some fake plants definitely. there will probably be a million pics of it when i do manage to get it set up. you know how i am! :D

well aparently a bunch of the crabs know that we're going to be moving soon, and decided that now would be the perfect time to dig down for a molt, grrr, silly crabbies, making things more complicated!!

yay! hermie is back up from his molt, and has a new leg part. he's checking out some new shells and eating food, and bugging his new buddies!

more updates on hermie to come...
update on the straws... biggest guy is out from his molt and wreaking havoc upon the tank! he's getting the little-er guys to start causing trouble and is digging giant holes all over the place. the good news is that they seem to be getting along really well, and hanging out together a lot. here they are!

it's not a very good pic, since i took it through the glass, oh well, next time. that's biggest guy in the middle, and smallest guy on the right, and then big guy on the left. we really haven't named them, but we'll come up with something eventually. i like to wait and see how their personalities are and if there's anything funny that they do before i name them, either that or they'll just end up with names like "booger" or "stinky bear" :)

wow! these have been two crabbie-filled days! we got Hermie yesterday from Christine, a friend of Jenn-A's. he's a med/small PP, and is very cute. no pics of him yet, since he's been chilling out in his little house and i don't want to bother him just yet. pics of him soon though!

and now for the insanity part. we got 9 crabbies in the mail (yes they were ordered, they didn't just show up). and here they are:

well, this tuesday there will probably be a new addition to the group. we're adopting a crab from a friend of jenn's. so we'll post pics of him when he arrives and after he seems calmed down, we'll introduce him to the crabbies i'm hoping he can be tank mates with.
there's also another thing that's really crazy that's happening. i might be acquiring some new species pretty soon. not really sure how many or what kind yet, but we'll see. pics will be up when they get here. and i'm sure there will be a huge post about them. i guess that's it for now, more to come later on!

silversides are so great!

well, we got some silversides. which was both fun and gross. i didn't want to use all of them, so i tried to break the chunk in half. it kinda snapped all the fish in the middle in half too, which was a little gross. so then i gave them to the hermits. immideate fun fest! rikku (rugusos) tried to take one from me while she was sitting on coral, and let go of the coral to grab the fish. she fell but started eating the fish, so aparently fish is more important. then i gave a whole one to little rug, and when i went to check on him a few minutes later this is what i saw:

that little pile of yuckiness infront of him used to be a fish.
so all in all, the fish was stinky, but they loved it.

another new crabby

well, it's official, i should not be allowed in pet stores without supervision, or maybe without access to money. i got another strawberry hermit crab, so now there'll be three.

i couldn't decide on which picture i liked best, so i put them both! he's much more orange than he looks in the picture, but oh well. so right now he's tearing through the iso he's in like crazy. we've tipped over the freshwater dish, and put it in the saltwater dish once already, and i'm sure he's done something else crazy since i just a loud crash. well, it looks like he's just digging all crazy in the corner. bet we won't be getting much sleep tonight! :D

we got 5 new micro pp's, all but 2 are still buried. so the "old" pp has buddies now! hooray! he's so happy and running all over the place.

there was one we almost didn't get, we thought he was dead, but started to move when i was holding him; so obviously we just had to get that one! he's doing really good and seems to be much happier now.

hooray! indy molted! i use upside down flower pots with holes cut into them as caves to hide in, and indy likes one in particular to dig down and molt in. the good thing is, i can see into it from the holes in the top! so i can see that he molted and has already started eating his exo. yay! i can't wait to see him. he's been buried since the beginning of march, so i miss him, and so does hilbert. i can't wait!

the jumbo pp's, blindy and cherry, got their tank cleaned and moved around. so they're happy and busy checking new stuff out. blindy had a cheerio she was eating and climbed up the inside of their plastic canvas hut- and kept eating the cheerio upside down! so yay's all around!

second levels and noisy straws

so there's finally second levels being built for the tanks. i don't know what took so long! hopefully they'll be able to go into the tanks in a few days.
kika- the light coloured straw, is supposed to be molting. she's in iso now, but keeps digging around in circles; especially at night when no one wants to hear her scratching about. hopefully she'll molt soon and get it over with.

she's the one on the left. brando, the dark red one, has been looking around for her. or, he's just climbing on everything cos it's fun, who knows! 8D

something new

today there was something new given to us: sugar cane! rikku and max like it a lot! we'll see about everyone else, but right now the micros are about to be angry, since their tank needs cleaning. oh well, it needs to be done.
